Lokasaṅgraha: The Wisdom of Collective well-being
"No one can truly prosper alone."
This is perhaps one of the simplest truths ever taught to humanity.
Yet it is also one of the most forgotten.
Thousands of years ago, Lord Krishna revealed this timeless principle in the Bhagavad Gita through the concept of Lokasaṅgraha—the welfare, harmony, and sustenance of society as a whole.
Unfortunately, modern civilization has slowly replaced this wisdom with another philosophy:
"As long as I am comfortable, everything is fine."
This thinking is not merely selfish—it is self-destructive.
The Meal You Can Never Truly Enjoy
Imagine that you are sitting before a magnificent feast.
The finest rice.
Fresh fruits.
Pure ghee.
Delicious sweets.
Everything that money can buy.
Now imagine that outside your house hundreds of people are starving.
Children are crying because they have nothing to eat.
Families are sleeping hungry.
Would you truly enjoy every bite?
Perhaps for a few minutes.
But deep inside, something would remain disturbed.
Human beings are not isolated creatures.
Our happiness is deeply connected with the condition of the society around us.
Lord Krishna understood this truth thousands of years before modern psychology began discussing collective well-being.
That is the essence of Lokasaṅgraha.
Your own welfare is inseparable from the welfare of the people around you.
Today's Illusion
Look around us.
Modern society has become obsessed with creating personal islands of comfort.
We install expensive air purifiers inside our homes.
But outside, the entire city breathes polluted air.
We buy water purifiers worth thousands of rupees.
Meanwhile, our rivers are filled with sewage, industrial waste, and mountains of plastic.
We cannot tolerate even a tiny piece of garbage inside our own house.
Yet we casually throw plastic onto roads, into drains, lakes, forests, and rivers.
We spend enormous amounts decorating our homes.
But the street outside remains broken.
We seek peace inside our bedrooms while creating chaos outside our gates.
This is not wisdom.
It is merely postponing the consequences.
Sooner or later, polluted air enters every home.
Contaminated rivers affect everyone's drinking water.
Overflowing garbage breeds diseases that do not ask whether someone is rich or poor.
Nature eventually reminds us that no wall is high enough to separate individual comfort from collective suffering.
The Forgotten Wisdom of Lokasaṅgraha
An air purifier may clean one room.
It cannot clean an entire city.
A water purifier may clean your drinking water.
It cannot revive a dying river.
A gated community may protect one neighborhood.
It cannot eliminate crime born out of inequality and neglect.
Private hospitals may provide excellent treatment.
They cannot replace a healthy society.
The illusion is that individual solutions can permanently solve collective problems.
They cannot.
Lokasaṅgraha teaches us that the real solution is to improve the condition of society itself.
When the air outside becomes clean, no one needs an expensive purifier.
When rivers become pure, everyone drinks safely.
When cities remain clean, diseases decline naturally.
The welfare of all ultimately becomes the welfare of each individual.
The Forgotten Duty of Leadership
This truth applies even more powerfully to leadership.
Whether it is the head of a family, a village leader, a government officer, a minister, or the highest political leader, the principle remains unchanged.
Many leaders today think first about securing comfort for themselves.
They ensure that the road leading to their own residence is perfect.
But the village roads remain broken.
They arrange uninterrupted electricity for themselves.
But ordinary citizens continue to suffer power cuts.
They seek the best healthcare for their own families.
Yet public hospitals remain neglected.
They send their own children to the finest private schools—or even abroad for education.
Meanwhile, millions of children study in schools lacking teachers, libraries, laboratories, or even proper classrooms.
But have they forgotten something very simple?
If every road in the village is good, their road will also be good.
If every school becomes excellent, their own children will grow up in a nation filled with educated, capable citizens.
If every hospital improves, they too will receive better healthcare whenever they need it.
If every child receives quality education, the entire nation becomes stronger—including their own families.
Their prosperity is not separate from society's prosperity.
This is the very heart of Lokasaṅgraha.
The Disease of "Me First"
Sadly, this disease is no longer limited to politicians.
It has spread everywhere.
Businesses chase profit without asking whether society benefits.
Citizens demand rights but forget responsibilities.
Families teach children how to become successful, but not how to become useful.
Professionals seek promotions while ignoring the communities that made their education possible.
Even spirituality sometimes becomes self-centered.
People pray only for their own success.
"My health."
"My wealth."
"My family."
"My future."
Rarely do we pray,
"May my society prosper."
"May my country flourish."
"May every child receive an opportunity."
Yet our ancient civilization repeatedly taught:
Your own future depends upon the future of everyone around you.
Lord Krishna's Timeless Vision
Lord Krishna did not ask humanity to abandon personal happiness.
He did not preach that one must become poor for others to become rich.
Nor did He teach that serving society requires neglecting one's own family.
His teaching is far more profound.
He revealed that the highest form of self-interest is enlightened self-interest—working in a way that uplifts society because your own well-being is woven into the well-being of everyone else.
When society rises, individuals naturally rise with it.
When society collapses, no amount of personal wealth can provide lasting security.
This is why Krishna repeatedly emphasized action performed for the maintenance and welfare of the world—Lokasaṅgraha.
It is not merely charity.
It is wisdom.
It is practical.
It is sustainable.
And above all, it is deeply spiritual.
Awakening Again
Perhaps India's greatest loss has not been economic.
Nor technological.
Nor political.
Perhaps our greatest loss has been forgetting this one beautiful idea.
We once believed:
"My village's progress is my progress."
"My country's strength is my strength."
"My neighbour's dignity protects my own dignity."
Today we often believe:
"My house."
"My comfort."
"My family."
"My success."
But walls cannot isolate us from polluted air.
Money cannot completely protect us from a broken society.
No amount of private comfort can compensate for public decay.
The future of India will not be built by millions of people trying to save themselves individually.
It will be built by millions who rediscover the wisdom that Lord Krishna gifted humanity.
The wisdom that teaches us to think beyond ourselves.
To act beyond ourselves.
To serve beyond ourselves.
Because when society flourishes, we flourish.
When the rivers become clean, everyone drinks.
When every child learns, the nation becomes wise.
When every road is built well, everyone travels safely.
When every citizen rises, no one needs to fear the future.
That is Lokasaṅgraha.
लोकसंग्रहमेवापि सम्पश्यन्कर्तुमर्हसि ॥
Lokasaṅgraham evāpi sampaśyan kartum arhasi.
"Perform your duty also for the welfare, stability, and upliftment of the world."

That is the timeless vision of Lord Krishna.
And perhaps, more than ever before, that is the wisdom India needs to remember today.
